Will this be the next Big Data mine?

Mobile mental health apps have grown in popularity over the last several years, and are now widely used across the country.

Like nearly every app, these apps collect data en masse– including potentially sensitive data. A new study sought to discover how securely mental health apps manage data.

According to Just the News, the study tested 578 apps and scored each according to their privacy practices.

From the article: “The researchers also found that 254, or 44%, of the apps assessed shared users’ data with third parties. In other words, they shared with parties not directly associated with the app or its users’ interests.”

Yikes! Moral of the story: if you use or are considering using a mental health app, do your research. Read the privacy policy, and if it isn’t clear, find another option.
