Forty-fifth President Donald Trump slammed Saturday Night Live (SNL) on his social media platform, Truth Social, on Wednesday and urged for the “bad show that’s not funny or smart” to be “put to rest” and his wish is likely to come true.
“I once hosted Saturday Night Live, and the ratings were HUUUGE! Now, however, the ratings are lower than ever before, and the show will probably be put to ‘rest,’” Trump wrote. “It is just not, at these levels, sustainable – A bad show that’s not funny or smart. L.M. is angry and exhausted, the show even more so,” Trump continued.
“It was once good, never great, but now, like the Late Night Losers who have lost their audience but have no idea why, it is over for SNL – A great thing for America,” Trump added.
In the latest episode of SNL, actor James Austin played a Trump on the phone during the January 6 hearings while sitting on the toilet.
Trump, per usual, is right. SNL’s longest-tenured cast member, Charlamagne Tha God, said in July that SNL’s future may soon come to an end.
When asked about the rumors of SNL’s end, he said, “There could be a lot of validity to that rumor, because 50's a good year to stop at.”
As Trump said, SNL’s end could likely be related to their plummeting ratings. According to reports, SNL’s Season 46 premiere in 2020 had 8.2 million viewers and SNL’s Season 47 premiere had 4.9 million viewers, nearly a 50 percent decrease in viewership.
“Late Night Television is absolutely dying. The hosts are not funny, talented, or smart. Actually, it’s amazing that they keep their jobs,” Trump wrote in a separate Truth Social post. “Ratings have gone south to a level never seen before. I could take the average person on the street, insert them in these loser's places, and the entertainment level would be better,” Trump added.
“Stephen Colbert is drawing ‘flies,’ Jimmy Kimmel is down almost 50%, and Fallon has lost 60%. Basket case Seth Meyers has lost most of his audience, BORING. Trump haters are DEAD,” Trump finished.
