Republicans Demand DOJ Explain Archer Surrender Request

A group of House Republicans are calling on lawmakers to return to Washington, D.C. for an emergency hearing to discuss potential Department of Justice (DOJ) interference in the committee's investigation into President Biden and Hunter Biden.

The request comes after the DOJ asked Hunter Biden's business partner Devon Archer to surrender to prison on Saturday. Archer was scheduled to testify to the committee on Monday on the Biden family, Hunter's business dealings, and the alleged role of his father, President Biden, in securing these deals.

“The DOJ is now actively committing the crime of obstructing a congressional investigation,” Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., wrote on social media Sunday. “If Devon Archer isn't in the witness chair Monday, we better haul every SOB at the DOJ before congress EVERY DAY to make them pay for this.”

Rep. Mike Johnson, R-La., echoed Gaetz's calls for lawmakers to return to D.C. “The DOJ's actions are a direct attack on the separation of powers and the rule of law,” Johnson said. “We must return to Washington immediately to hold the DOJ accountable.”

The DOJ has not commented on the allegations of interference.

The committee's investigation into the Biden family has been ongoing for several months. In April, the committee subpoenaed Hunter Biden and his business associates, including Archer. Archer has refused to comply with the subpoena, and the DOJ has now asked him to surrender to prison.

The DOJ's request for Archer's surrender has raised concerns among Republicans that the Biden administration is trying to interfere with the committee's investigation. “This is a clear attempt by the Biden administration to protect Hunter Biden and his family from scrutiny,” Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, said. “We will not allow this to happen.”

The committee's investigation is scheduled to resume on Monday. It is unclear whether Archer will be able to testify.
