After a long and protracted fight for the Speakership, the 20 Republican holdouts managed to score a number of concessions from Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) in exchange for their votes. One of those concessions is already bearing fruit.
House Republicans have formed the “Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government” which plans to examine the role the federal government and law enforcement agencies had in silencing and censoring social media through collusion with corporate America.
In a victory for conservatives, the committee will be chaired by Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH). Jordan, who was lobbied repeatedly as a Speaker alternative by the 20 GOP opposition, also chairs the Judiciary Committee.
The committee will be especially useful given the influx of instances in which the federal government, in the form of the FBI, has used its influence to force social media companies to silence users or stories like the Hunter Biden laptop story of October 2020.
Since Elon Musk's takeover of Twitter, multiple independent journalists have been releasing the “Twitter Files,” which have uncovered that the FBI regularly reached out to Twitter to point out certain accounts or stories that were deemed as misinformation.
“Twitter’s contact with the FBI was constant and pervasive, as if it were a subsidiary,” wrote journalist Matt Taibbi. “Between January 2020 and November 2022, there were over 150 emails between the FBI and former Twitter Trust and Safety chief Yoel Roth.”

Throughout the Twitter Files, Taibbi outlines that the FBI would regularly send lists of Twitter accounts in need of “additional action” to members of Twitter’s staff. In most instances, this led to suspensions or bans.
Other instances that will likely be investigated include the comparison of parents who were speaking out against local school boards as domestic terrorists by Attorney General Merrick Garland in early 2022, as reported by the Post Millennial.
House Republicans need to get to the bottom of how the FBI has repeatedly influenced social media companies to limit Americans’ freedom of speech online and simultaneously affected the 2020 election with the suppression of the Hunter Biden laptop story. With Jim Jordan at the helm, the committee is sure to be effective in uncovering the truth.
The committee is likely to call for government agencies and personnel to come to testify and the committee will use subpoenas if those requests are ignored, according to the Post Millennial.
All Americans should look forward to the work conducted by Rep. Jordan and the rest of his Republican colleagues on the Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government.
