GOP Congressman Introduces Bill To Defend Mount Rushmore As Progressive Activists Deem It ‘Offensive’

On Friday, Rep. Dusty Johnson (R-SD) introduced the “Mount Rushmore Protection Act” in response to progressive activists, such as former NBA player Jalen Rose, who have called for the term “Mount Rushmore” to be retired given its supposedly “offensive” nature.

In a video released to Twitter in August last year, Jalen Rose argued that Mount Rushmore is as offensive as some now-retired NFL team names like the Washington Red Skins and Cleveland Indians: “Why do you think Washington changed their name from Red Skins? I do a show and didn't say that word for eight years and my co-host David Jacoby, we both said ‘they're going to change the name someday.' Why? Because it's offensive.”

“What about the Cleveland Indians? Why did they change the name? Because it's offensive,” Rose argued. “So I want to continue to challenge myself and to challenge you to do something. Can we retire using Mount Rushmore? That should be offensive to all of us, especially Native Americans and indigenous people, who were the first people here before Christopher Columbus.”

“That land was stolen from them when it was discovered that it contained gold. Then 25 years later to add insult to injury, four American presidents were put on what we call Mount Rushmore on top of the dead bodies that are buried right underneath,” he claimed. “So I call for you, and for myself, I'm owning this too, let's stop using the term Mount Rushmore when we talk about our favorite rappers, our favorite movies, and our favorite players. I know you are going to take action.”

In response to calls like these from progressives, Rep. Johnson sought to defend Mount Rushmore's name and enshrine its protection into law.

DEMOCRAT WANTS TO CRIMINALIZE ‘HATE SPEECH,' ‘REPLACEMENT THEORY,' BY CURTAILING YOUR 1ST AMENDMENT RIGHTS IN SWEEPING NEW BILL

“Our nation’s history is not without its flaws, but there is no doubt the faces on Mount Rushmore represent democracy, freedom, and the great American experiment,” Johnson explained, as reported by Fox News. “Removing or changing Mount Rushmore will not change the past and will not move us forward as a country. We must protect Mount Rushmore for generations to come.”

“The four presidents on Mount Rushmore championed the cause of freedom,” said Johnson. “Our nation has an imperfect past, but the calls to cancel Mount Rushmore will not move our nation forward. My legislation ensures the protection and beauty of Mount Rushmore for generations to come.”

The bill, which was introduced last Congress as well, would mandate that “no Federal funds shall be used to alter, change, destroy, or remove, in whole or in part, any name, face, or other feature on the Mount Rushmore National Memorial.”

Once again progressive activists have attempted to go after American history by attacking a cherished symbol. Their desire to destroy the nation's history and rewrite America's story is yet another way for leftists to destroy American culture and install their own regime to solidify their cultural and political power. Thankfully, however, representatives like Congressman Johnson are standing in their way.
