DC’s Dulles Airport could be renamed for Donald Trump under GOP proposed bill

A group of GOP House Representatives is pushing to rename Washington Dulles International Airport, the Washington, DC area’s primary international airport, to the Trump International Airport.

House GOP Chief Deputy Whip Guy Reschenthaler introduced the bill on Friday, along with cosponsoring Reps Michael Waltz, Angy Ogles, Chuck Fleischmann, Paul Gosar, Barry Moore, and Troy Nehls, according to Fox News.

“In my lifetime, our nation has never been greater than under the leadership of President Donald J. Trump,” Reschenthaler told the outlet. “As millions of domestic and international travelers fly through the airport, there is no better symbol of freedom, prosperity and strength than hearing ‘Welcome to Trump International Airport’ as they land on American soil.”

If passed, “the Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia shall after the date of the enactment of this Act be known and designated as the ‘Donald J. Trump International Airport,’” the bill states.

“Any reference in any law, regulation, map, document, paper, or other record of the United States to the airport referred to in subsection (a) shall be considered to be a reference to the Donald J. Trump International Airport.”

Dulles is a busy international hub servicing airlines and routes that do not operate out of nearby Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and is critical for lawmakers and other Washington officials’ travels.

The airport was ranked in 2023 33rd out of 764 US airports in terms of passenger traffic, and services roughly 25 million passengers per year. The airport is also the 4th largest in the country in terms of land area.

While the bill has little chance of being taken up by the Democrat-controlled Senate, the airport, if passed, would be the second in the area named for a Republican commander-in-chief.

“In 1998, Congress renamed the National Airport in Washington after one of our great presidents, Ronald Reagan. It is only fitting that we would do the same for another one of our greatest presidents, Donald J. Trump, especially as he stands against the onslaught of weaponized government to fight for Americans like us,” Moore told Fox News.

“I can see no more fitting recognition than naming both airports in our nation’s capital after America’s two best presidents: DCA after President Reagan and Dulles after President Trump,” Gosar said.

In a press release, Reschenthaler recounted Trump’s “unprecedented wins for our nation” during his term as president, including record-low unemployment, increased incomes for middle-class families, making the US the number one producer of oil and gas in the world, and keeping the southern border secure.
