Conservative Firebrand Lauren Boebert Introduces Sweeping New Bill That Would End Your Money Going to Planned Parenthood For Abortions

Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO), who made a name for herself by being one of the GOP holdouts against Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), has introduced her first bill to the 118th Congress which would defund Planned Parenthood.

The bill has notably been introduced on the day of the March For Life, an annual march through Washington, D.C. by pro-life activists.

“I’ve introduced my first bill of the 118th Congress. It would defund Planned Parenthood,” the congresswoman announced on Twitter. “We need to protect the sanctity of life in this country. To all those marching at the March For Life, let’s rally behind this bill and get it done!”

The bill titled the “Defund Planned Parenthood Act,” would prohibit American taxpayer dollars from going to Planned Parenthood and instead redirects those funds to local health centers. More specifically, it would direct $235 million to provide healthcare for women through local organizations, as reported by The Daily Wire.

“The nation’s largest abortion provider has no business receiving taxpayer dollars,” Boebert said in a statement. “Planned Parenthood claims these funds go to healthcare for women, but last year, Planned Parenthood performed a record number of abortions while also reducing the number of well-woman exams and breast cancer screenings it performed. Instead of funding Planned Parenthood, my bill will redirect this funding to community health centers that actually meet the health needs of women across the country.”

From 2020 to 2021, the federal government gave $633 million to Planned Parenthood, an organization that centers abortion as its main reason for existing.

In addition to Boebert, 29 other members of Congress cosponsored the legislation including Rep. Robert Aderholt (R-AL), Rep. Jodey Arrington (R-TX), Rep. Brian Babin (R-TX), Rep. Dan Bishop (R-NC), Rep. Mike Bost (R-IL), Rep. Ken Buck (R-CO), Rep. Ben Cline (R-VA), Rep. Andrew Clyde (R-GA), Rep. Jeff Duncan (R-SC), Rep. Ron Estes (R-KS), Rep. Pat Fallon (R-TX), Rep. Randy Feenstra (R-IA), Rep. Chuck Fleischmann (R-TN), Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), Rep. Bob Good (R-VA), Rep. Paul Gosar (R-AZ), Rep. Glenn Grothman (R-WI), Rep. Michael Guest (R-MS), Rep. Andy Harris (R-MD), Rep. Diana Harshbarger (R-TN), Rep. Clay Higgins (R-LA), Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA), Rep. Brian Mast (R-FL), Rep. Mary Miller (R-IL), Rep. John Moolenaar (R-MI), Rep. Alex Mooney (R-WV), Rep. Bill Posey (R-FL), Rep. Matt Rosendale (R-MT) and Rep. Robert Wittman (R-VA).

Students For Life of America President Kristan Hawkins explained that there is no single organization that “stands to make a profit off the violence of abortion more than Planned Parenthood. Deceitfully, Planned Parenthood guises their business model as one that helps women while their latest annual report shows they made $633 MILLION from taxpayers while ending 383,460 little lives in that same time frame.”

“Screening services to help women were all down by double-digit percentages proving they’re in the business of abortion,” she explained. “Students for Life Action applauds Rep. Boebert and her colleagues for cutting funds from this abortion giant while lifting up the local pregnancy centers that stand to gain nothing from helping women facing a crisis pregnancy.”

According to the press release, Planned Parenthood's other services have dropped drastically in recent years. Since 2010, the organization's cancer screenings are down by 74 percent, prenatal care is down by 72 percent, and contraceptive services are down by 41 percent.

With organizations that promote abortion like Planned Parenthood still receiving federal dollars, it is shameful that such a practice has yet to be banned. While it is unlikely to pass the Senate, it will send a clear message to Planned Parenthood that the House Republicans won't sit idly by while the organization conducts hundreds of thousands of abortions a year.
