California ‘Bernie bro’ charged with hate crimes after allegedly breaking into Jewish home yelling ‘free Palestine’

A man wearing just underwear broke into a Los Angeles home and threatened to kill the Jewish family living there on October 25. He was later was arraigned Monday in the Van Nuys Courthouse. Daniel Garcia's social media shows that he was an avid supporter of Bernie Sanders, Gavin Newsom, and believes that Israel's governance is akin to that of Nazis. He is currently being held on $125,000 bail.

On October 25 at approximately 5:20 am, Garcia attempted to enter the victim’s home by kicking in the door while shouting antisemitic slurs including threatening to “kill Jews!” He was caught on camera shouting “Free Palestine” and “brown people matter.”

Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón announced that Daniel Garcia has been charged with threatening to kill a Jewish family in their home during the antisemitic attack.

He was a field organizer for Bernie Sanders' presidential campaign in 2019 and a grassroots organizer for the 2016 campaign. He worked as a volunteer to gain universal healthy care in California, worked on Tulsi Gabbard's 2020 presidential campaign as a volunteer, and also with the Environmental Justice Advisory Committee wiht the California State Assembly.

Gascón said of Garcia, “We unequivocally denounce the violent act committed against an innocent family in our community. This act, fueled by hate and antisemitism, has no place in our society, and we condemn it in the strongest terms possible.”

“Our commitment to protecting and defending all residents of our community is unwavering. Acts of hatred that threaten the safety and security of our families will not be tolerated.”

“We will provide support and justice, leaving no room for intolerance to thrive. Those who spread hatred will face the full force of the law.”

Garcia is charged with three felony counts including one count of criminal threats, one count of attempted first-degree residential burglary, and one count of vandalism $400 or more in damage or destruction or property.

Also, Garcia allegedly committed hate crimes in violation of Penal Code Section 422.75.

If convicted as charged, Garcia will face a maximum sentence of seven years and four months in state prison.
